Mother’s Day is approaching

Mother’s Day is celebrated in different times of the year. But here in Spain it will be next Sunday, May 5. This tradition, which goes back to the ancient Greece, will have thousands of Spaniards buying a gift for their mothers. But, how much money will they allocate? What are the most common gifts? What is the perception of this celebration? The last report we have made here, at your sustainable jewelry store Collartz, answers all these questions.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

We consider Mother’s Day more important than Father’s Day

Thus, our research reveals that Spaniards consider Mother’s Day more relevant than Father’s Day and that up to 8 out of 10 will make a gift to their mother. And they will spend up to 20% more in the present. Apart from the emotional component, sons and daughters consider that this date is more important for their mothers than fathers, and that they are more excited to receive a gift. However, there are nuances depending on the age range. It is mothers between 50 and 70 who are perceived as more “excited” and “grateful”.

We spend 50€ on average

If we break down the average cost in the gift, it is 50 euros in up to seven out of ten cases. Only 6% are willing to pay more than 150 euros, and the rest is between 50 and 100. Taking into account what mothers want and the perception of many children about this day the figure is not bad. Despite the fact that most children end up buying a gift, 66% think that it is a commercial event.

As we discovered in Collartz, the illusion with which mothers will receive the gift continues to prevail. Therefore, it is more an excuse to give than the commemoration of a day in itself.

Males spend 10% more than females

The expense varies according to the sex of the child: females spend up to 10% less than males. It also changes according to the community, since it is the Andalusians, the Madrileños and the Basques who are the most generous giving away, while the Catalans, Valencians and Balearics are on the extreme side of the list.

However, beyond money, mothers really value the thinking and preparation of the gift. As for creativity, Murcia and Canaries children win.

What children give and mothers wish

Among the most frequent gifts for Mother’s Day, Collartz’s analysis shows that fashion and accessories as the most frequent gift. These star in 66.3% of the presents, especially in the case of young people. A real success, taking into account that 9 out of 10 Spaniards recognize giving much importance to the accessories when dressing. Jewels are Mother’s most favourite gifts, followed by watches, bags and pashminas or scarves are the most favourite gifts.

And if Jewels are Mother’s most favourite gifts, Silver Earrings and Bracelets are especially successful, more so when they have an original design or are personalized. As for clothes, most prefer to try it on, unless it is a more expensive item such as a leather jacket or similar. Gastronomy and decorative elements are also a frequent gift.

8% incurs into sexist gifts

Unfortunately, 8% incurs into sexist gifts such as appliances, vacuum cleaners, irons and the like. Such gifts that are better bought as a family because they are precisely for use and “enjoyment” of it. In any case, this occurs more frequently in the higher age ranges. As for the rest of gifts, books, flowers and chocolates are often chosen and this, as we shall see later, are not precisely the most wanted ones.

Where do they buy

Even if online purchases have skyrocketed during the last decade, the difference between gifts purchased online or in brick and mortar stores is only 60 % vs 40%. However, up to 80% of children compare the price of the product online. A behavior that reveals some planning. Those who buy with more hurry end up opting, mainly, for flowers, chocolates and the like.

What Mothers wish for and what do they don’t want

We know that Jewels are Mother’s most favorite gifts . And which are the worse? Mothers consider that the worst gifts are imitation perfumes, blenders and appliances (unless they have asked for it), porcelain dolls, faulty outlet garments and boxes of unwrapped chocolates. These are related to a last-minute purchase, rush, lack of interest and lack of personalization. Interestingly, this perception shifts if the chocolate box is wrapped, with their name.

Making a homemade breakfast without cleaning the kitchen are not valued either, considering that up to 7 out of 10 mothers take care of most of the household cleaning. Nor are bouquets of flowers, as up to 9 million in Spain are allergic. Money or subscriptions to the gym are not valued either, because they can be misinterpreted.
